Like many Canadians, Rebecca Stewart from Hamilton, ON dreamt of a better career. As a stay at home mother of 4, her financial situation was holding her back from pursuing her professional goals. She needed a way to pay for her education and found the Shape Your Tomorrow Scholarship from National Academy of Health & Business.
National Academy recognizes that despite their many financial aid options, some people require a special opportunity and so the Shape Your Tomorrow Scholarship was created in 2011. “We are proud of the scholarship and what it means to our communities. It provides a deserving individual with a unique opportunity to find success.” explains Mark Harrington, President of National Academy.
Each year, National Academy creates the scholarship opportunity through its Facebook page. The scholarship asks people to share why they should receive the career training and how it will impact their life. 10 Finalists are chosen and a fortunate winner is chosen by their peers who “like’ the finalist’s submission.
“I was fortunate enough to search for the scholarship right before the end of registration. I learnt I was a finalist when I logged into Facebook, I was shocked and over joyed!” Rebecca proclaimed. “I really wasn’t surprised by the support of family and friends… what surprised me the most was the support from complete strangers” she adds.
Rebecca began receiving votes within minutes after her submission was posted onto Facebook. Rebecca leveraged her contacts within Mommy Groups, Parenting Support Groups, as well as her friends and family. When the voting deadline expired at midnight and the winner was announced, Rebecca won by a single vote, showing that every vote counts. “My reaction to winning was a very quiet, extremely excited dance around the living room. If it wasn’t just after midnight with the rest of the house sleeping, it would also have been very loud!” she recalls.
Rebecca will be joining National Academy this fall in the Personal Support Worker Diploma program, a program that will lead to a career helping others. “We look forward to having Rebecca join National Academy in Hamilton. Our previous winner Cristin Walsh was a superstar and it changed her life” recalls Rae-Ann Roberts, Campus Director.
While the Shape Your Tomorrow Scholarship has wrapped up for the year, National Academy offers many financial aid programs to assist individuals interested in pursuing their career. For details on National Academy’s programs and financial aid options, please visit www.nahb.ca
