While dental modifications are usually used to restore teeth to their natural appearance, some trends seek a stylized look that is far from natural. These trends—like grills and teeth whitening—may seem modern, but they actually have roots going back thousands of years.
To give you an idea of how far dental procedures have come, and how old some of them are, check out the surprising history of these three dental modification trends.
Tooth Whitening Was Started 4000 Years Ago by the Ancient Egyptians
Graduates of intra-oral dental assistant training may know that teeth whitening is the most common cosmetic dentistry procedure. What they might not know is that it’s been around for a long time. In 2000 BC, Ancient Egyptians whitened their teeth using ground pumice mixed with wine vinegar, while Ancient Romans used urine (yes, urine!) to bleach their teeth. Today, white teeth are still widely sought after, although the procedures involved are quite different from those of the past.

However, not all cultures have historically thought of white teeth as desirable. The Vikings, for example, stained their teeth with red resin as a way of frightening their enemies. And until the end of the 1800s in Japan, married women dyed their teeth black in a practice called ohaguro. While ohaguro was a social custom, it actually also protected against tooth decay.
Mayan Jade Inlays Have a Lot in Common with the Inlays Seen by Grads of Dental Assistant School
When you go to intra-oral dental assistant school, you’ll learn about prosthodontics, such as inlays and onlays. Today inlays are commonly used to restore damaged teeth, but inlays have actually been around for thousands of years and not always for tooth restoration. From 300 AD to 900 AD Maya royalty affixed jade inlays to the front of their teeth. These inlays were worn because the green colour of jade was symbolic of agriculture and sustenance. By wearing jade inlays, Mayan royals were symbolically taking on responsibility for feeding their people.
Grills Are a Dental Modification that Can Be Traced Back Thousands of Years
Modern grills (or grillz), which are decorative covers for teeth embellished with gold, diamonds, and other precious stones, are one of the most popular dental modification trends today. Mayan jade inlays are a precursor to modern grills, but they are far from the only one. For example, Etruscans (who lived in Italy from 88 BC to 200 BC) actually invented grills by weaving gold wire into their teeth. The practice was mainly done by rich Etruscan women to flaunt their social status.
Modern grills, however, take root in the 1970s in the West Indies, where gold caps were common. As people from the West Indies immigrated to North America—primarily New York City—these gold caps were adopted and embellished by hip hop artists in the 1980s. As hip hop became more mainstream from the 1990s onwards, celebrities like Katy Perry, Madonna, and Beyoncé started sporting them as status symbols, much like Etruscan women did more than 2000 years ago!

One of the central principles law enforcement professionals can rely on during and after their training is the standard of proof, which uses available evidence to prove a legal claim or argument in a courtroom. In Canada, the burden of proof lies with the government, which means that the prosecutor must prove their case against the defendant for the crime being adjudicated.
Since the standard of proof is split into three different categories, it can be hard to understand how they all work. If you’re interested in police foundations, read on to learn about the standard of proof, and how it relates to your career in law enforcement.
Students in Police Foundations Training Know the Importance of Prima Facie
Prima facie is a Latin phrase which means the equivalent of “at first sight”. It is a standard of proof in both criminal and civil law which indicates, upon examination, that there is sufficient evidence to corroborate or support a case in court.
This does not mean, however, that it should be assumed that the defendant is guilty just because they’re accused of something. After the Crown has established a prima facie case, because the burden of proof is on the prosecutor, the defendant does not need to prove their innocence, but rather establish consistent, reasonable doubt about the evidence being presented, and whether or not it indicates their guilt.

Police Foundations Explores the Meaning of ‘Beyond a Reasonable Doubt’
One of the most well-known aspects of the standard of proof is what’s called ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ (BARD). This is also one of the most common standards of proof in law, and means that there must be almost or absolute certainty based on the evidence that someone is guilty of committing a crime.
As students taking police foundations courses know, ‘beyond a reasonable doubt’ is not something that can be based on sympathy, prejudice, or feelings, but instead is something that must be a logical conclusion. If, for instance, a defendant is on trial for robbing a store, it’s not enough to say that you know they are guilty beyond a reasonable doubt because of the colour of their shirt. Instead, you should rely on definitive evidence such as a security recording showing the robbery.
Proof on a Preponderance of the Evidence
Professionals with police foundations training know that the standard of proof can be applied differently in criminal cases than in civil cases. Also called the ‘balance of probabilities,’ the proof on a preponderance of the evidence is used in civil trials to determine that a specific conclusion based upon the evidence is more probably or likely than the argument of the other legal party.
For example, a defendant is taken to court over a dispute with their neighbour. The neighbour claims that the defendant has damaged the fence they share by running it over with their lawnmower, but the evidence shows that there are actually lawnmower tracks coming from the neighbor’s side of the fence. This means that the balance of probabilities is in favour of the defendant. While this form of the standard of proof operates in a ‘binary’ system—either it is true or false—it is still important to be able to distinguish between the two.

There is still debate over whether exposing children early to technology like tablets, computers, and digital entertainment can help or hinder their personal development, and popular advice can vary from enthusiastic support to staunch condemnation.
As with many things, however, there are both good and bad aspects that you should take into consideration, especially if you’re considering a career in early childcare. Technology has the ability to open children to new modes and styles of learning, but it also can affect their development and how they learn. If you’re interested in getting involved in early childcare, read on to find out what you should know about how technology can impact your future career.
1. Technology Can Affect Children’s Attention Levels
A good attention span helps our thinking process, perception, memory, and decision-making, among other areas. Our development of attention is influenced by our environment during and after childhood, and that includes the use of technology.
Technology primarily uses visual stimuli, which makes our brains pay attention to information in a more segmented way than reading or manual tasks. This means that children who are consistently exposed to technology are more capable of drawing information quickly, but it also means that they may fall behind in other areas, such as their attention span and ability to engage in critical thinking.
2. Early Childcare Assistants Should Keep Kids Active Indoors and Outdoors
The increased focus on technology has led to a reduction in how frequently children participate in regular physical activity. A recent Kaiser Foundation study found that children spent a daily average of 7.5 hours using entertainment technology, and this can affect how they build and apply their creativity and imagination.
Professionals with early childcare training should remember to keep kids active with classroom activities that engage different areas of their brains than the ones they use when interacting with technology. This can be as simple as gathering the class to read a book out loud, playing a game at recess, or incorporating hands-on toys and crafts that stimulate creativity.

3. Early Childcare Assistants Should Balance Screen Time Use in the Classroom
If you’re interested in an early childcare assistant career, technology can be a useful resource to use. It’s important, however, to remember moderation.
Childhood development is comprehensive, and incorporates many different areas. Overwhelming kids with too much technology can make them fall behind in other crucial areas, which is why you should try to reach a healthy balance between using technology and engaging students in other activities that encourage growth. Having students participate in real-world social activities teaches them different lessons than what they learn from an online activity, and a great daycare includes a healthy mix of both.

Communication plays a key role in how we understand and speak to one another. It can influence our relationships, build trust, and create a system of support between the people that we rely on.
It can be difficult, however, to always practice good communication, especially in emotional or upsetting situations. Poor communication can complicate how someone perceives themselves and others, and lead to destructive attitudes both personally and within a relationship.
Community service workers (CSWs) rely on their communication skills to find successful solutions to a disagreement. There are certain approaches that make a peaceful solution more possible, and others which can potentially worsen or prolong the present conflict. If you’re interested in learning more about a career as a community service worker, here’s what you need to know about the right and wrong ways to approach conflict resolution.
1. CSWs Know to Address, Instead of Avoid Conflict
The main goal of conflict resolution is to encourage understanding between people that may have different ideas, opinions, and beliefs. In order to establish trust between the disagreeing parties, it’s important to emphasize an open, accepting atmosphere.
While the thought of avoiding an argument is appealing because it is less stressful, not addressing building frustrations can often make these frustrations worse over time. Bringing up issues in a respectful, but concise manner is the first step to successful communication and resolution.
2. Try Not to Use Overgeneralized or Absolute Language in Your CSW Career
Occasionally, people can use overgeneralized phrases when they’re upset and trying to express their feelings. This can include what’s known as absolute language, which uses words like ‘always’ and ‘never’, for instance: “You never listen to what I have to say,” or, “We always do what you want to do”.
This can make it difficult to address the problem at the heart of the conflict, but proper, comprehensive CSW training can prepare you with the strategies you need to address conflict in a way which encourages trust and open communication between all parties.

3. CSW Training Teaches Students to Listen More than They Talk
Successful communication isn’t only about what you say, it also includes how you say it, and how you respond to what the other person is sharing with you.
Dismissing or ignoring a problem that someone is trying to express is a common issue in conflict resolution. This may be because one or both parties believe they are superior or above the problem. A healthy way to address this behaviour is through the promotion of active listening, which acknowledges the disagreement and the concerns of those involved in the discussion.

4. Successful Conflict Resolution Means CSWs Don’t Play the Blame Game
A natural response to conflict is often to deflect blame from yourself and put it on another person. This can lead to criticizing others to weaken their credibility or shame other involved parties.
Professionals with community services worker training should instead try to promote objectively analyzing the problem, which considers the needs and perspectives of both parties in order to find a working solution to their dispute.
5. Community Service Workers Should Avoid Making Assumptions
When it comes to conflict resolution, it’s important to remember that there is rarely a ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to view a situation, and a problem can be far more complicated than what it appears to be.
Sometimes people assume they know what others are thinking or feeling, but this is often influenced by their own perspective and interpretations, and leads to negativity and misunderstandings. CSWs should remember that everyone has a unique perspective and way of seeing the world, and try to encourage others to explain their actions or side of the story instead of making assumptions.

Level 2 Dental Assistants handle a number of important responsibilities in a dental practice, including mechanical polishing, obtaining impression and occlusal records and applying anesthetics and whitening. One of the most important of their responsibilities, though, is helping to take and expose dental radiographs, also known as dental x-rays.
Anyone who’s ever been to the dentist likely has some idea of how this procedure works already, having gone through it themselves, but students in intra oral dental assistant training might be interested to learn more about this useful diagnostic tool, how it works and why it’s so useful.
Dental X-rays Use Radiation to Create Images of a Patient’s Teeth and Bones
Dental x-rays are images that use radiation to highlight a patient’s teeth and bones below the surface of their skin, gums and enamel. While these x-rays used to be exclusively done on film, modern dental practices are increasingly using digital x-ray photography, as it’s quicker and easier, and emits significantly less radiation.
However, it’s important to note that the amount of radiation used in either technique is incredibly low and considered safe for children and adults. The use of a lead vest to protect a patient’s chest, abdomen and pelvic region can further ensure the patient’s safety as well. Pregnant women, however, are cautioned to avoid dental x-rays, as radiation may not be safe for developing fetuses.
There Are Many Different Types of Dental X-Rays
Whether using film or a digital process, as an intra oral dental assistant, you’ll be expected to take several different types of intraoral dental x-rays, which you’ll learn about in your intra oral dental assistant training.
The bitewing technique, for example, requires a patient to bite down on a special piece of paper in order to judge how well the crowns of their teeth line up and to check for interdental cavities. Occlusal x-rays, on the other hand, are done with the jaw closed and, unlike bitewing x-rays, take in all of a patient’s teeth with one shot. Periapical x-rays provide a view of an entire tooth, from the crown to the bone that supports the tooth. Panoramic x-rays are done with a machine that rotates all the way around a patient’s head, giving a 360 degree view for checking wisdom teeth, planning for dental devices or investigating jaw problems.

Why Dental X-Rays Are Important for Students in Intra Oral Dental Assistant Training
Students in intra oral dental assistant schools should know that X-rays are important in examining those elements of a patient’s dental health that can’t be seen with the naked eye. This could include any number of issues of varying severity, such as tooth decay, misalignment, changes in the condition and position of teeth and bone loss in the jaw. Without dental x-rays, dentists and dental assistants would be limited to what they can see and what the patient can report, which would mean a lot of dental problems would only be found after developing into more severe cases. Dental x-rays, then, allow dental practices to be more proactive in their care.
Dental x-rays are also important for children, as they allow a dentist to monitor the growth of adult teeth and the development of wisdom teeth, ensuring that no teeth are impacted and there is sufficient room for the adult teeth to come in. This is why children generally require more frequent x-rays than adults.
Even adults, however, should be getting dental x-rays about once a year as part of their regular dental care.
